Learners' Experience in a School-within-a-School Model
10:15-11:15, Corning-Painted Post High School
Meet our learners and hear about their experience in "The Zone." From true learner-led projects, to feedback cycles, reflections in ePortfolios, maple syrup, app creation, digital media and much more, let them explain about their learning evolution.
What is The Zone? Our learning community meets every other day for 160 minutes. We spend an entire morning engaged in interdisciplinary projects that incorporate elements of both our STEAM and French curricula. We devote a significant amount of time to creating community and building connections, both human and intellectual. The majority of our project work with learners also focuses on viewing topics through the lens of social justice. Those intending to enroll should understand that the Zone uses an approach to learning that is different from a typical course. Learning/Progress is shown in their ePortfolio through images, video, audio, written expression and students connect their learning to the ISTE Standards, World Language Standards, and Equity Standards.
THE Maple Syrup Network
11:25-12:25, Corning-Painted Post High School
In our third year of The Maple Syrup Project we continue our expansion of our sugar bush from 12 to 46+ trees with 81 taps, building a K-12 program, fully integrating the French program, creating a tree-to-table opportunity, and engaging the larger community. Listen to our continuing story and our plans for incorporating English, History and Science into this school-wide project and how we use it to help build our Farm-to-School program. This session will also include a hands-on tree tapping experience, actionable resources to implement a maple syrup program in your classroom, link to our learners' Oral History Project and how to join THE NYS Maple Syrup Network.
Creative Problem-Solving through Design Thinking
10:15-11:15, Corning-Painted Post High School
Join us as we explore the design process, a framework to practice creative problem-solving for students of all ages. After a rapid empathy-based design cycle, we will experience the what, why, and how of design thinking. We will also share design resources for curricular-based projects that span preK-12.
Tinkercad for Creation, Learning, & Joy
12:35-1:35, Corning-Painted Post High School
Bring a device and create with Tinkercad! From 3d models to simulations, from circuits to Legos to 3d printing, Tinkercad is a web-based tool for creation. In this hour-long session we will explore both how to use Tinkercad, as well as how to connect it to your curriculum.
